A Soul Train weekend. Me: a poor, confused Chicano kid - growing up in the barrio, post civil-rights, desegregation era, mostly devoid of an identity - disconnected and enduring racism after being bussed miles away to attend school in an affluent, Caucasian area. My weekend deprogramming program included my watching, and relating to Saturday morning shows such as Fat Albert and Soul Train, produced by a minority group different than my own…. Don Cornelius’ passing is, for me, a nostalgic and profound event.
